Worship returning to Zoom starting July 26th.

Dear Union Church family and friends,

Starting July 26th, we will be going back to worship on Zoom.

I do not make this decision lightly. As pastor of this congregation, I made the decision with the consultation of the Church Council, and the Spiritual Life Committee in particular, to re-activate in-person worship with increased safety protocols on July 5th. At the time, it was my understanding, after reading the latest executive orders from the governor's office, that gatherings of up to 50 people were permitted state-wide. I have now been made aware that this understanding is incorrect, and the legal opinion is that the increase in indoor gathering capacity applies only to specific counties in Michigan, which do not include Calhoun or Branch, the two counties our congregation "pulls from." If I had understood this earlier, I would not have re-activated in-person worship at this time.

While these executive orders to not apply to religious bodies legally, that is due to the wish of the governor's office to avoid the legal issues separating church and state; this certainly does not mean that religious gatherings are immune to spreading this disease. Our concern as a congregation is not only to do the "legal" thing, but, more importantly, to do the right thing; to do that which protects the most vulnerable members of our congregation and the community outside of our congregation.

I look forward to gathering in-person for worship once again when gatherings of up to 20 are "cleared" in our area by the governor's office.

Please note that the Zoom "meeting number" has changed from the one we used before July 5th. We are not posting this number publicly for security reasons, but if you would like to share it with others, please do. If you would like guidance regarding the use of Zoom, please contact me for help via email (pastor@unionchurchtekonsha.net) or cell phone (1616-570-2392).

Peace,

Pastor Jennifer Fair
